Silver Spotlight is your chance to get to know the people that make Silver tick as they answer quick-fire questions on their roles and life outside of the agency. This month we were delighted to pop Thomas Layland under the spotlight and find out more about our talented Creative Designer.

Which three words would you use to describe your role?

Creative, adaptive and open-minded.

What are your day-to-day tasks?

It really varies. It could be anything from working with Dell EMC for an event or working on a new logo for a fintech company. Every day is different at Silver which is what really makes the job so interesting.

What’s the best part of the job?

I really enjoy it when you can see the projects you have worked on have a positive effect on the client’s ROI and the positive feedback they give back to you. It’s really rewarding.

What’s the biggest challenge of your role?

We deal with a plethora of clients who each have different deadlines and requirements, so it can sometimes be challenging to balance it all whilst delivering exceptional work.

Favourite project you’ve worked on and why?

I really enjoyed working on the Arum rebrand because I was involved from the start so I was able to see the progression – from the first brand workshop to seeing the brand being nominated for an industry award.

What’s your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

It has to be working on the Dell EMC ‘Transform Your World’ project because it has been nominated for various awards. It was great to be part of the conception and watch our idea come to life – with great results.

What do you do when you’re not producing great marketing work?

I love photography and I always carry some form of camera with me. I just love the fact that anywhere you are you can still find something new and interesting to take pictures of. I also find it interesting how you are able to capture unique things, knowing that if you don’t get that shot at that time, you might never be able to get it again. Once it’s gone it’s gone.

What piece of technology could you not live without?

Any photographic device, I would hate not being able to capture anything ever again.

Who do you look up to the most – real or fictional?

Leonardo DiCaprio, he’s just super cool. He always plays such great characters and on top of that, he is an avid pusher of environmental issues, something which I am into. Overall he just has such a cool life and is a great role model.

What brand do you admire and why?

Uber. They’ve recently rebranded and taken on a more playful and independent design studio approach. Even though they’re a worldwide company, they can still pull it off and it’s really refreshing to see.

Who would you choose to play you in a film?

I would say Charlie Day. He looks a bit like me, he’s nearly as weird as me, he’s super funny and I can imagine him being great at improvising and be able to embody my personality. His weirdness resonates so there wouldn’t be a need for much acting.

Favourite film?

We Need to Talk About Kevin. I really liked it because although it’s dark and depressing, it’s very well done.

Which cartoon character do you most relate to and why?

Ren from Ren and Stimpy, mostly because he always needs sleep and that’s something I can really relate to.

Thanks, Thomas! Keep an eye out for the next Silver Spotlight post next month.
